Triumph with mobile application that monitors the welfare of children and parents

Team Matalapaine to represent Finland in the Imagine Cup finals in Australia

Already for the third time in a row, a team from Turku University of Applied Sciences will represent Finland in the global finals of Imagine Cup. This time the winning team that triumphed in the Finnish finals in Jyväskylä was Team Matalapaine from the Salo campus. The team members are students in Business Information Technology Samuli Sulkko and Jesse Tuominen, student in Business Administration Ville Koskinen, who also works at Yrityssalo, and TUAS Lecturer Tuukka Hämeenoja who is currently doing postgraduate studies at the University of Turku.

The software designed for Windows Phone 7 was refined together

The software developed by the team is designed for use with Windows Phone 7 devices. It focuses on monitoring the welfare of parents and children. When implementing the mobile application, the topics under discussion with health care personnel were in particular what kind of problems the software should search solutions for.

The topic which Samuli came up with was processed further by the entire team.

“A demo version of the software is already available. In addition, our objective is to get a local child welfare clinic to test it”, says TUAS Lecturer Tuukka Hämeenoja.

The team prepared for the Finnish finals especially by fine-tuning their performance, and it was particularly the confident presentation that helped the team sweep to victory. Team Aaltovation from Aalto University and The BOBBS from Lappeenranta University of Technology competed against the TUAS team in the finals.

Everyone who participated in the project is already in working life and their studies are on the homestretch. Ville Koskinen works as a Project Manager at Yrityssalo, Samuli Sulkko as a Junior Software DeveloperatFoodie.fm and Jesse Tuominen as an assistant at Turku University of Applied Sciences.

The Finnish Imagine Cup 2012 finals were organised on 25 April in Jyväskylä in connection with the Finnish National Skills Competition Taitaja 2012.

TUAS teams have also succeeded before

A team from TUAS has represented Finland in the global Imagine Cup finals already in the two previous years. In 2010, Signbook (Tomi Härkönen, Petteri Lehtonen, Kimmo Koski and Johannes Maliranta) represented Finland in Poland and placed among the top five. As for last year, Team 25k with their Vigilis application (Johannes Maliranta, Kimmo Koski and Petteri Lehtonen) represented Finland in New York and placed among the top 18.

Team Matalapaine competes in the international finals in the software design category. The finals will take place in Sydney, Australia, on 6–10 July.

Imagine Cup is the largest annual technology competition for students in the world. It gathers the most promising young talent from across the globe to solve today’s challenges with creativity and technology. The entries’ target is to support the global development targets of the UN. In 2011, over 300 000 students from over 100 different countries participated in Imagine Cup.
