Mediation is an opportunity guaranteed by law to mediate and solve conflicts caused by criminal acts and conflicts. Mediation is a free service which provides both the offender and the victim an opportunity to meet confidentially through an impartial mediator in order to discuss constructively, to influence the resolution and to agree on possible damage compensation.

Mediation is possible only between persons who have expressed their consent and are able to understand the meaning of mediation and the solutions arrived at in the mediation process.

Mediation is also possible when under 15-years-olds are involved. In principle the law does not exclude any crime. Crime against an underage person make an exception, as the victim is entitled to special protection.

The civil-case mediation does not apply to business litigation, at least one of the parties must be a natural person.

In matters concerning child custody and maintenance we ask you to contact the child's place of domicile and the child welfare officer in the social services.

Customer help
An initiative for mediation can be made to the Mediation Office by a party of a crime of dispute, the guardian of a minor, trustee or other legal representative, the police, prosecutor or other official.

If the matter concerns violent crime against the suspect's spouse, child, parent or other close relation, only the police may take the initiative of starting mediation.

Varsinais-Suomi Mediation Office branches are located at Loimaa, Salo and Uusikaupunki. The branches work by appointment only. Mediation meetings can also be organized at other locations in the region.
