Primary Health Care Services

The task of Primary Health Care Services is to care for the health of Turku’s residents. Primary Health Care is divided into preventive health care, outpatient health care, oral and dental health care as well as other centralised operations. The work is carried out in care chains that have ascending levels of care and which work in close cooperation with specialised health care. Emergency clinics provide emergency first aid outside normal working hours and this will be organised by the Joint Emergency Services at the T-hospital starting on 01 April, 2013. The Welfare Division is also responsible for dealing with infection diseases.

Preventive health care includes maternity and children’s clinics, school and student health care, family planning clinics and sexual health services, the Unit for Health Promotion and Milli.

Outpatient care is provided on weekdays at six health care centres where general practioners (doctors) and nurses receive patients. Care is provided on the basis of an evaluation of the need for care. Diabetes, the distribution of medical supplies, services for immigrants, the monitoring of infectious diseases, the control of infectious diseases and vaccination advice are cared for and dealt with through centralised functions.

Oral and dental health care services provides care based on whether an assessment of an oral or dental health problem is urgent or non-urgent, and it also provides preventive dentistry. There are a total of 14 dental clinics around the city.
