Knowledge for well-being and performance

The cooperation between Eerikkilä and Turku University of Applied Sciences is expanding from sports and exercise technology to more general knowledge-based management of well-being and performance. Performance and well-being information can help at work and in leisure time.

The information generated by MyE.Way serves the development of the training group, the club and the sport as a whole.

The cooperation between Eerikkilä and Turku University of Applied Sciences started in earnest in autumn 2021, when the maintenance and development of the MyE.Way ERP system developed by Eerikkilä was transferred to the University of Applied Sciences.

MyE.Way is an information system owned by Eerikkilä, which is primarily used for player and coach development with the Finnish Ball Association and the Finnish Salibandy League. The information system already contains performance, training and well-being data of more than 20 000 players.

MyE.Way development work in recent years has focused on system architecture, integrations and the mobile app, among other things.

With the help of the information, the player can monitor their own development and the coach receives support for their coaching work.

Tommi Aaltonen, Product Director of MyE.Way at Eerikkilä, says that the renewal of MyE.Way has brought significant added value to the implementation of player development programmes, namely the Huuhkaja and Helmaripolu in football and MAAJOUKKUETIE in volleyball.

The cooperation between Eerikkilä and Turku University of Applied Sciences is also close due to the fact that Mikko Pohjola, Eerikkilä’s Research and Development Director who is on leave, is currently working as a research officer and senior lecturer in the Intelligent Sensing and Computing Technologies (INSIGHT Lab) research group at Turku University of Applied Sciences.

From SportTech to broader knowledge management

At Turku University of Applied Sciences, the sport-focused “SportTech” is now expanding to more general holistic performance and wellbeing management with knowledge, which is also the background of the MyE.Way system.

This broader research trend is referred to as “Knowledge Management for Human Performance”.

– This can mean not only developing the performance of athletes, but also, in a very broad sense, almost any knowledge-based development of human well-being and mobility, well-being at work, leadership or, for example, the performance of rescue and defence services.

– One topical application could be the development of the performance of drone pilots, for example. The testbed could be a multi-user virtual reality metaverse with a variety of sensors connected to collect a wide range of performance data.

– Managing performance and wellbeing with knowledge covers information, information systems, user interfaces, but also individual skills and organisational processes, says Mikko Pohjola.

Next, we will look at the productisation of holistic wellbeing development for non-competitive client groups.

In addition to the maintenance and development of MyE.Way, Eerikkilä and Turku University of Applied Sciences cooperate in research, development and innovation projects related to knowledge-based management of well-being and performance, as well as in training activities.

– This cooperation is expanding and deepening. We see great opportunities for future development in this cooperation, says Hannele Forsman-Lampinen, Director of Sport and Education at Eerikkilä.

– In addition, we have already implemented a pilot on holistic wellbeing with our partners, using MyE.Way. The pilot involved families interested in developing their wellbeing and adapted the processes of competitive sport to fit the wellbeing of ordinary citizens. The pilot was a great success, and our next step will be to look at how to productise holistic wellbeing development for non-competitive client groups, Aaltonen reveals.
