3DHydrogenEngines and 3DHydrogenEngines – investment

We develop hydrogen fuelled internal combustion engine technologies
Traction motor

The 3DHydrogenEngine project strives to accelerate the transition to a hydrogen-based energy system by developing hydrogen fuelled internal combustion engine technologies. A working hydrogen engine would have a significant role in our energy transition, but questions relating to the construction of the engine and hydrogen embrittlement remain. We answer those questions through metal 3D printing and local testing.

The goal is to find engine structures that suit hydrogen, solve hydrogen embrittlement challenges that relate to hydrogen engines, and thus advance their use. In addition, the aim is to develop and test innovative solutions regarding hydrogen engine development together with local companies, support research, innovation and developmentwork in the region and thus support regional competitiveness and regional businesses. The main target groups are the manufacturers of internal combustion engines and other businesses working in the production and supply chain relating to the internal combustion engine.

The project lays the foundation for the transition of existing industry from fossil fuels to purely hydrogen-based energy and the utilisation of Power to X technologies. As a result, the target group is also society and the environment. The aim is to enable the use of hydrogen as an energy source in both transport and decentralised energy production.

The 3DHydrogenEngine project is also linked to the 3DHydrogenEngine investment project (1 th of Sep 2025 to 28th of Feb 2027). The investment project will make procurements that enable the implementation of a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine. The procurements include a.o.t. materials and equipment related to 3D printing, as well as components related to hydrogen fuel injection, control and measurement. In addition, investments will be made in a traditional combustion engine blank, which will be modified to use hydrogen during the project. In this way, it will be possible to verify how fossil fuel engines can be converted to run on hydrogen.

The 3DHydrogenEngine is one of the projects in Turku that implements ecosystem agreements. InnoCities are supporters and spurs of new thinking and accelerate the renewal of business life. By working together, we can solve the current and future challenges of the global sustainability crisis and the Finnish innovation system. https://www.innokaupungit.fi.
