Artificial intelligence to make work easier

We examine how AI can support teacher's work

The project examines the potential of artificial intelligence to support the work of teachers, promote well-being and increase the productivity of work. Through interviews, participatory observation and surveys, the experiences and views of higher education teachers and students studying to become teachers on the use of artificial intelligence, related opportunities and challenges in the development of individual and community-based teaching are identified. The research increases understanding of the use of artificial intelligence in expert work.

AI highlights new job demands and resources that affect the work, well-being and productivity of teachers and their work communities. AI can provide new opportunities for solving the multiple challenges faced by higher education teachers and those studying to become teachers of vocational education (e.g. workload of work, large group sizes, individual needs of students and administrative tasks) and improving the quality of teaching.

New research data is needed from the following points of view, among others:
a) how AI can facilitate, support and enrich expert work in the field of education at both individual and community level;
b) what are the new requirements for the use of AI;
c) the type of support and resources needed by the experts;
d) how AI supports the identification and development of competence; and
e) how AI can promote community and well-being in the work of teachers.

Although AI has been extensively researched in many areas, its potential in the work of teachers has been studied only to a limited extent. The challenges faced by higher education teachers, such as increasing workload, increasing group sizes, taking into account individual student needs, and increasing administrative tasks, require new solutions that AI can offer.

Turku UAS, HAMK and the University of Turku produce recommendations on how teachers can use AI to review and develop their own pedagogical competence (e.g. personal feedback provided by AI), as well as on how AI can be used to support individual and team teaching and teacher well-being.
