CircularRoad – Closing the Loop with Recycled Materials in Road Construction

We promote the use of circular economy solutions in road construction

CircularRoad addresses a key challenge in the Central Baltic region: the underuse of waste and recycled materials in road construction despite high demand for resources and significant waste generation. Currently, valuable materials are often landfilled, while reliance on virgin materials remains high.

CircularRoad is a cross-border project in which we develop solutions for the efficient use of waste and side streams in road infrastructure. Currently, a large share of materials such as demolition waste, ash, and tyres remains unused, even though we simultaneously rely heavily on virgin materials.

The goal is to make circular economy solutions the new normal in infrastructure construction, rather than the exception

In the project, we combine research, pilots, and practical stakeholders: we map material flows, develop technical solutions, and construct two demonstration roads in which up to 75% of the material is recycled.

Turku University of Applied Sciences contributes in particular through value chain development, stakeholder collaboration, and circular economy business models.

The goal is to make circular economy solutions the new normal in infrastructure construction, rather than the exception.
