Movement disorders are serious, progressive neurological diseases that have a significant impact on quality of life. It is important for patients who are diagnosed to receive evidence-based information on symptoms, disease progression and self-management strategies. The main objective of the DiMod project is to improve primary information services and peer support practices for patients with movement disorders. We will develop ways for patients and their families to access primary information, including digitally.

The aim of the DiMod project is to develop first-aid practices for movement disorders and a digital peer support model in Finland and Estonia.
Traditional first aid practices are expert-centred and communication is primarily one-way. The DiMod project will focus on the role of the patient and peer support in addition to expert knowledge. New digital solutions for primary care practices will also be explored through co-development.

The DiMod project is building a new modernised model for providing primary information on movement disorders. The project’s work includes:

  • Conducting literature reviews and updating evidence-based knowledge on different movement disorders
  • Modernising the presentation of primary data and compiling materials on existing websites
  • Organising workshops and participatory work for people with lived experience
  • Testing and developing a digital peer support model in collaboration with patients
  • Developing information materials for health professionals to guide patients to reliable sources of information and support
