Networked Environmental Monitoring and Evaluation System for Intelligent Surveillance – NEMESIS

NEMESIS infrastructure supports interdisciplinary environmental research
Sunset in the Turku archipelago

The NEMESIS (Networked Environmental Monitoring and Evaluation System for Intelligent Surveillance) research infrastructure (RI) addresses the critical need for comprehensive coastal marine data collection in the Archipelago Sea region and its catchment area situated on the Southwest coast of Finland in the northern Baltic Sea. The research infrastructure is intended to support interdisciplinary research, focusing on the interaction of drainage basins and coastal seas, coastal and aquatic ecology, and coastal maritime security-related aspects.

The Archipelago Sea is a region of natural and cultural-historical diversity, a source of pride for the people of Southwest Finland, and strategically important for both Finland and Europe. It is vital for tourism, regional identity, and unique biodiversity, and an important marine logistics (including strategic sea routes) and maritime industry hub.

The Archipelago Sea is a region of natural and cultural-historical diversity, a source of pride for the people of Southwest Finland, and strategically important for both Finland and Europe.

However, the region also faces significant challenges, including poor ecological status of waters and declining biodiversity, due to intensive anthropogenic pressures and maritime security-related heavy marine traffic in a shallow and complex coastal environment.

NEMESIS is a networked research infrastructure platform that integrates operational and experimental components to study and monitor processes and mechanisms of environmental and security anomalies and long-term changes in the Archipelago Sea and its catchment area. The research infrastructure is intended to support interdisciplinary research, focusing on the interaction of drainage basins and coastal seas, coastal and aquatic ecology, and coastal maritime security-related aspects.

The NEMESIS research infrastructure also enables interactive co-development of solutions for environmental protection.

The research infrastructure ties together existing high-level expertise in the area, enabling impactful interdisciplinary research ranging from the drainage basin to the coastal sea, from short-term anomalies to long-term changes. The NEMESIS research infrastructure also enables interactive co-development of solutions for environmental protection and facilitation of blue economic growth and solutions for the maritime industry. NEMESIS aims to facilitate research and surveillance on environmental resilience and security anomalies in dynamic coastal environments, from drainage basins to the open sea, including sea surface – atmosphere interactions and the underwater environment.

The project has been funded by the Research Council of Finland.
