The project reduces urban stormwater pollution by combining nature-based solutions with data-driven risk assessment. It develops a GIS-based model to help municipalities identify critical areas and prioritize investments effectively. Solutions are piloted across several Baltic Sea region cities to enable proactive stormwater management.

Urban areas in the Central Baltic region are facing increasing coastal pollution risks due to aging drainage infrastructure and more frequent extreme weather events. The RARE-G project develops a transferable framework that helps municipalities identify, prioritize, and implement effective measures to reduce pollutant loads in urban drainage systems.

The project combines Nature-Based Solution (NBS) pilots with a GIS-based risk assessment framework to support data-driven investment planning. Pilot implementations take place in Viimsi (Estonia), Jurmala (Latvia) and Kaarina (Finland), with real-world monitoring of their impact.

The project delivers operational NBS solutions, risk assessment tools, guidance materials, and monitoring data, enabling municipalities to improve infrastructure resilience and water quality. Beneficiaries include municipalities, utilities, and the wider public.
