Existing diesel vehicles may have a new future as electric vehicles. RETROFACTORY develops an operational model for scaling up heavy vehicle electric conversions into industrial practice. We bring together vehicle technology, supply chains and service models for businesses. Our goal is to support low-emission transport and create new business opportunities in Southwest Finland.
A new role for existing vehicles
Electrifying a fleet is a major decision for a transport company. Electric retrofitting replaces a vehicle’s diesel engine with an electric powertrain and batteries. RETROFACTORY investigates when conversion can be a technically viable and economically justified option. We also assess its potential to extend vehicle service life and reduce energy use and lifecycle emissions.
From individual solutions to an industrial process
We develop a Retrofitting Factory concept that brings conversion stages, component supply chains, testing and certification into a coherent operational model. The work examines electric powertrains, batteries and control systems and their safe integration into existing vehicles. Company interviews, workshops and practical case studies connect the development work with industry needs and experience.
Business opportunities across the value chain
For transport companies, the project provides knowledge on conversion costs, benefits and suitability for their operations. For workshops, component suppliers and service providers, it explores new roles in the electrification value chain. We also develop business models such as retrofit leasing, Conversion as a Service and lifecycle services that may help SMEs adopt electric fleets.
Connect with the project
The project will deliver an industrial conversion model, technology and impact assessments, business models for SMEs and a development roadmap. Turku University of Applied Sciences is the sole project implementer and collaborates with FuturEV, Pekant Oy and IONCOR.
