The Right Kind of Chemistry – Harmonising Chemistry Education, Study Pathways and Learning Materials in Higher Education to Support Smooth Transitions

We are harmonising chemistry teaching
Laboratory, test tubes and glassware

The Right Kind of Chemistry project aims to harmonise chemistry education and course structures across Finnish universities of applied sciences. The project develops and pilots field-specific learning materials to support inter-institutional collaboration and flexible learning pathways.
The goal of curriculum development is to facilitate student transitions between institutions and from universities of applied sciences to universities, to build national study pathways for both basic and advanced chemistry studies, to support degree completion, and to ensure the recognition of prior learning across higher education institutions.

The key objectives of the project are to:

  • Develop chemistry curricula to ease transitions between institutions and from UAS to university-level studies.
  • Create nationally harmonised study pathways that support both foundational and advanced chemistry studies and accelerate degree completion.
  • Ensure mutual recognition of studies between higher education institutions.
  • Increase interest in chemistry-related fields by renewing curricula and making chemistry studies more engaging.

The project will produce new digital open learning materials that support online and hybrid learning, enabling more flexible study and progression.
The outcomes related to curriculum harmonisation and the development of learning modules for basic and advanced chemistry will be published by the end of 2026. Piloting, further development, and implementation will take place in 2027.
