Violence encountered by paramedics: anticipation and risk management in a changing environment

Emergency care is an essential part of the overall safety of society, and its importance will continue to grow in the future. Societal challenges and the changing global security situation are increasing the scope and responsibilities of emergency care.

Safety challenges are an unfortunate reality in emergency care and the risk of emergency care staff being exposed to violence in the workplace is exceptionally high. From an occupational health and safety perspective, violence encountered by paramedics in the workplace has a wide impact on the safety, well-being, job satisfaction, attractiveness and retention of paramedics.

The publication highlights how solutions to a complex problem were sought through a multi-professional approach. It describes the results of the project, with recommendations for further action. The results show major areas for improvement at different levels of the organisation.
