Sustis – Projects on Sustainable Development

Sustainable development solutions as student work

In Sustis projects, multidisciplinary student teams develop concrete solutions to promote sustainable development in companies and organisations.

The projects combine the multidisciplinary skills of engineering and business students. The teams often include international students, bringing an international perspective to the implementation. In Sustis projects, student teams come up with and implement solutions to a sustainability challenge presented by the client.

Projects offer your company or organisation e.g..

  • surveys and studies (e.g. recycling practices, procurement)
  • planning events and campaigns (climate day, nature action event)
  • development ideas and guidelines for the everyday life of organisations.

For students, Sustis offers work-based learning through practical projects.

The Sustis project will last eight weeks, from October to December. Project topics are agreed in spring or early autumn, and student teams start work in October. Work progresses in weekly meetings and the results are presented to the clients in December.

Here’s how a Sustis project progresses

1

Contact us and tell us about your needs

Tell us about the sustainability challenge you are addressing. Together we will assess whether the Sustis project meets your needs and agree on a project topic.

2

Project topic to be agreed in spring or early autumn

During the spring or early autumn, the terms of reference and objectives of the project are defined. This will ensure that the topic supports both the students’ learning objectives and the needs of the organisation.

3

Student teams start in October

In the autumn, student teams (10-15 students) start working together. The teams are multidisciplinary and often include our international graduate students.

4

The project is student-driven (eight weeks)

The student team will work on the project from October to December. The work is student-driven, but the client will provide the necessary additional information and liaise with the team during the project.

5

Done!

In December, the students present the final outcome of the project: a report, a development idea, an event concept or other jointly agreed output.
