Basics of Nursing in Medical Surgical Patients and Health Promotion Simulation

What will you learn?

The course contains 1 ETCS studies in English

The student:
• knows the most important internal medicine diseases and the internal medicine patient’s treatment path and evidence based nursing process
•manages the key examinations, treatment methods and nursing methods used in the care of an internal medicine patient in compliance with patient safety
• recognizes and understand the importance and need of rehabilitation in the treatment process of an internal medicine patient
• knows the role and importance of the nurse in the guidance and support of disease prevention and self-care and masters the necessary methods in a multidisciplinary team
• knows the most common medical treatment used in the treatment of internal diseases
• is able to integrate nutrition care and guidance together with a multidisciplinary network of experts in the nursing of an internal medicine patient
• is able to work as a team member in a multi-professional work community

What do the studies include?

– The most common examinations and treatment measures to be used in the care of an internal medicine patient
• Care paths, methods and rehabilitation of an patient with internal diseases in acute and long-term care
• Prevention of internal diseases, guidance of an internal medicine patient, support for self-care and commitment to care
•Medication treatment of patient with internal diseases
•Nutritional treatment and guidance of an internist patient and the most common special diets

Simulation of Health Promotion TERSI
In the simulation the student
– deepens the support and guidance of the internal medicine surgical patient and perioperative patient and the client and self-care in a multi-professional manner
• is trained in simulation in the implementation of patient fluid therapy
Contents
• Practicing clinical competence in the basics of nursing and fluid care of the internal medicine-surgical and perioperative patient
•Training in promoting health and guiding the patient

The course is scheduled for the autumn season 2026.
Lessons are held on weekdays between 8:15 AM and 3:45 PM.

The content of the course is the most common internal medicine, treatment paths and methods of treatment of an internal medicine patient:
– cardiovascular diseases
– lung diseases
– diabetes
– neurological patient: AVH, MS, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy

Methods of treatment of an internist in acute and long-term care.
Monitoring and support of respiratory, circulatory and endocrine systems.
CPR.
Use of ABCDE, NEWS and ISBAR tools.
Internal medicine patient guidance, support for self-care and commitment to treatment.
Cardiovascular Diseases and Their Medication.
Diseases of the respiratory system and their drug treatment.
Diseases of the endocrine glands and their drug treatment (especially diabetes).
Neurological diseases and their drug treatment.
Basics of laboratory sampling.

Who is the course suitable for?

Open UAS courses are open to everyone. Open UAS courses are selections from Bachelor’s and Master’s degree program curricula, and you’ll usually study in the same group as degree students. 

When you enroll, you will be asked to authenticate yourself before you can access the enrolment form. You will need Finnish online banking credentials or a mobile certificate.

There may be prerequisites for participation on individual courses. You can find information on required previous studies or know-how in the course details on our study guide, see the link for course details above. Please note that you are responsible for making sure that you have the skills and know-how required for participation.  

To participate on Master’s level courses, you must have completed a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher education degree in Finland or abroad.

Open UAS offers individual courses in both Finnish and in English. Please note that you must have sufficient language skills to take part in Open UAS studies. Generally, language skills at level B1 or above are recommended for participating in higher education. Some study options may have specific language skill requirements. 

Open UAS study fee

Open UAS studies are subject to a study fee. Individual courses usually cost 15 € per ECTS credit. Read more about study fees.

Starting the studies

Once you have enrolled in an Open UAS course, you will receive an email confirming your enrollment and payment instructions. Your registration will be accepted once the payment has been completed.
