Engineering expertise promotes sustainable development

In the Bachelor of Engineering programme on Water Engineering and Circular Economy, you will gain technical expertise to solve the environmental challenges of communities and the business sector. The studies provide a comprehensive view of water and waste management processes, as well as of the significance of regional planning in building a sustainable infrastructure and protecting water resources and natural waters. The principles and business opportunities of circular economy are revealed through concrete examples and applications in various industries. As a student, you will learn to assess the environmental impacts and sustainability of solutions using a life cycle approach.

Water Engineering and Circular Economy programme is practical and working life oriented. The studies emphasize project work, multidisciplinary collaboration, and learning in authentic environments. Students are involved in development projects related to working life at an early stage, where they solve real challenges in water protection, water management, recycling, and environmental technology together with companies and public sector actors. Experimental learning takes place in laboratories and field environments, where modern measurement and analysis methods are utilized. Practical assignments are related to the development of water purification, material circulation, or environmental monitoring, for example. As a student, you have the possibility to participate in Turku UAS’s research and learning environments and take part in research and development projects carried out for the world of work, seamlessly combining theory and practice. The programme prepares you for jobs in both Finnish and international companies.

The education is suitable for anyone interested in an engineering degree that can have a positive impact on the environment and promote sustainable development. For an engineer working with water engineering and circular economy, problem-solving skills and the desire and ability to acquire new knowledge are important.

Study contents

The scope of the Bachelor of Engineering degree is 240 ECTS credits. The studies include:

  • Basic studies, which create a natural sciences-technical foundation (mathematics, physics, chemistry, and a broad range of environmental topics), for the first three semesters (1.5 years).
  • Professional studies in water technology and/or circular economy.
  • Communication and language studies
  • Internship periods and a thesis on a topic related to the world of work.
  • Optional studies

In your professional studies, you can specialize in the field of water technology or circular economy, but you can also flexibly choose studies from both specialization areas for your study plan according to your own interests. Thanks to the flexible curriculum, you can also study a certain number of subjects from other fields as part of your degree if you wish.

You can earn credits and at the same time deepen your expertise by participating in ongoing development projects in our research groups.

In your thesis, you will deepen or broaden your expertise and demonstrate that you can work independently, critically evaluate and use scientific information, set research questions, and answer them with the knowledge you produce.

If you have fluency in Finnish you can also study the Bachelor’s degree in Energy and Environmental Engineering in Finnish. Read more on our Finnish website.

After graduating

Jobs can include, for example, planning, product development, research, consulting, and official duties in the field. After graduation, you can work, for example, at:

  • Waterworks (water supply and wastewater treatment) and in municipal technical services
  • Environmental consulting
  • Waste management and circular economy projects
  • Environmental and process development work in industry
  • Research and development tasks
  • More broadly in various engineering roles in industry and the public sector.
