The Satakunta Air Command (Satlsto) is a cornerstone of the Finnish Air Force. As a high-readiness unit, it monitors and secures Finland’s airspace 24/7. Based in Pirkkala, Satlsto is responsible for the air defense of Southern Finland and plays a pivotal role in developing air warfare tactics and combat technology.
During the visit, which focused on the protection of critical infrastructure and personnel, the exercise team familiarized themselves with the faculty’s cutting-edge research environments.
Strong expertise and NATO collaboration
The Faculty of ICT and Industrial Engineering has established itself as a significant player in the defense and security sector. The faculty hosts several research projects focusing on dual-use technologies, including autonomous systems, cyber and hybrid resilience, and trustworthy artificial intelligence.
“Our experts have been proactive in building strategic networks. As a result, our sector now has a strong presence in various expert formations within NATO, the Finnish Defense Forces, the Digital Defense Ecosystem (DDE), and the PIA, Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries,” says Tero Reunanen, Dean of the faculty.
These strategic partnerships ensure that research and development efforts remain closely aligned with the rapidly evolving requirements of the modern defense environment.
Technology and Comprehensive National Defense
The visit showcased the faculty’s ability to translate technological excellence into practical, field-ready solutions. Dean Tero Reunanen and Senior Lecturer Juha Saarinen, who participated in the Air Command exercise, demonstrated applications for drones, the metaverse, and autonomous systems to the visiting team.

Exercises like this strengthen our joint readiness. For an educator leading future talents, it is a matter of honor to contribute to national security and the security of supply.
