Turku UAS accelerates the development of dual-use technologies

The faculty of ICT and Industrial Engineering at Turku University of Applied Sciences brings together the needs of companies, broad research expertise and strong defence-sector networks. The aim is to rapidly turn new technologies into practical solutions.

When Europe’s security situation was severely shaken in spring 2022, the need for defence and security innovation grew rapidly. Recent years have shown how quickly technology can evolve: for example, solutions related to drones and their detection are now developed in a matter of weeks rather than years. Turku UAS responded by strengthening its focus on defence and security technology development.

“In addition to international activities, our collaboration covers large Finnish companies such as Patria and Nokia, as well as public authorities, SMEs and start-ups. We help companies secure funding, and in several networks we are the only higher education institution,” says Mika Luimula, Head of Education and Research.

Civilian technology for defence needs

Modern warfare emphasizes machine-to-machine operations, joint operations across military branches and an up-to-date situational picture – needs that current command systems do not adequately meet. Turku UAS has special expertise in identifying the dual-use potential of technologies and in simulations.

“In practical development work, a fast pace, broad research and versatile expertise come together,” says Chief Advisor Kari Kallinen, who moved to the higher education sector from the Finnish Defence Forces.

Sensitive data stays protected

Companies are increasingly interested in AI solutions, but transferring data involves uncertainties. The faculty of ICT and Industrial Engineering has developed AI solutions that allow shared data to be used securely. The patentable solution combines the requirements of data protection, accuracy and regulation, and helps turn research results into practical products. Technology can be scaled to almost any business area that handles sensitive information.

“We carry out research, development and innovation projects with companies and public authorities. Our special expertise lies in reliable and secure networked systems, devices and data transfer solutions, tells Principal Lecturer Mikko Pänkäälä.
