MilVerse4MDO develops metaverse solutions and immersive digital environments for defence and multi-domain operations. The project combines real-time data, artificial intelligence, simulation, and human-technology interaction to support training, situational awareness, operational planning, and decision-making. It brings together the expertise of Finnish defence companies, technology providers, and research organisations in a collaborative development effort. At the same time, the project strengthens the competitiveness of Finland’s defence technology sector and lays the foundation for future digital defence solutions.

New Solutions for Digital Operational Environments

Defence environments are becoming increasingly digital. At the same time, real-time information, interoperable systems, and the integration of physical, virtual, and simulated environments are becoming more important. MilVerse4MDO explores how these environments and technologies can be combined into solutions that support multi-domain operations.

Modern warfare is changing rapidly. The trend is moving ever more strongly toward machine-to-machine operations.
Mika Luimula, Head of Education and Research

The project focuses on metaverse technologies, data integration and visualisation, and human-technology interaction. Its objective is to develop user-centred solutions that enable information from different sources to be used effectively and support activities in demanding digital environments. In addition to technological development, the research examines the usability, benefits, and suitability of the solutions for different application needs.

The solutions are developed and evaluated through practical proofs of concept and pilot activities. Publicly described application areas include training and simulation, operational planning, situational awareness, after-action review, and logistics. The pilots bring together the expertise of research organisations and companies while generating knowledge for the further development of the solutions.

The growing volume of data increases the need for solutions that help identify information relevant to decision-making. Artificial intelligence plays a key role in this.
Timo Haavisto, Senior Advisor

MilVerse4MDO brings together Finnish research organisations, defence companies, and technology providers. The collaboration builds a shared understanding of future digital operational environments and strengthens the research, development, and innovation capabilities of the participating organisations. The project supports the development of new products, services, and models for collaboration while improving the international competitiveness of Finland’s defence technology sector.

Turku University of Applied Sciences coordinates the project. At Turku University of Applied Sciences, the project is implemented by the Futuristic Interactive Technologies and Cyber and Hybrid Resilience research groups.
