RESINA – Resource effecient energy storages

Duration of the project
Source of funding
European Regional Development Fund 2021 – 2027 (ERDF/ERDF)
Total funding
222 062 €
The main goal of the RESINA-Resource-wise energy storages project is to develop an operating model for waste heat energy storage that utilizes waste, industrial side streams and land masses for infrastructure construction.
By utilizing the operating model, industrial companies or district heating companies can store e.g. waste heat generated in the summer to be used later, which increases energy efficiency significantly.
The possibility for municipalities to influence the implementation of heat storage and other energy solutions that require space, such as solar parks, through planning and permit procedures is also considered.
It is necessary to use stored thermal energy, especially during peak energy consumption Instead, by using stored energy reserves, carbon emissions can be reduced.
Storing thermal energy using waste materials or side streams enables a transition towards a circular economy and the use of virgin raw materials decreases.
The project develops modeling and simulation methods that are suitable for the accurate description of various side stream materials in the design of heat storage facilities. The methods can be used to validate the scalability of thermal storages.
In addition, the goal is to find a new use and added value for selected construction demolition waste, materials classified as waste and various surplus materials from industrial processes such as slag and ash, and municipal landmasses such as clay and aggregate, and to increase business activities in accordance with the circular economy in companies and municipalities.
The suitability of the materials is investigated by laboratory tests. The project consolidates and expands regional networks created in previous development projects into a national reference group. It will enhance activities for finding solutions towards the green transition and the development needs of the energy sector.
In the national reference group, information is accumulated in close cooperation between companies and stakeholders between regions, and companies are able to increase their competitiveness and turnover, increase the level of expertise and the breadth of resources. Through reference group activities, the project gets direct information about the needs and views of companies in the field, and joint development can be implemented.
