The investment component of the ETAB – Energy Transition for Apartment Buildings project piloted battery storage technology at the Turku University of Applied Sciences campus. Designed for outdoor use, the battery storage system produced the first Finnish field data on battery storage performance in winter conditions. The data gathered opens the door to further research into spot-price optimization, maximizing self-consumption, and optimal battery sizing for housing company sites — work that continues in the national Kiinteistöakku 2030 project.
The investment project of the Taloyhtiöiden energiamurros (ETAB – Energy Transition for Apartment Buildings) project piloted battery storage technology as part of the energy transition of housing companies in Southwest Finland. The original aim was to gather experience with a new energy solution, such as a combined solar power and battery system, directly in a housing company.
Because of housing companies’ long decision-making timelines, no suitable pilot site was found during the project period, so the pilot was instead carried out at the Turku University of Applied Sciences campus. The battery storage system, designed for outdoor use, corresponds in implementation and scale to a solution suitable for a housing company, and it produced the first Finnish field data on battery storage performance in winter conditions.
The winter measurements are only the beginning: the data gathered opens the door to further research, including spot-price optimization for batteries, maximizing a housing company’s own electricity consumption with a battery, and determining the most cost-effective battery size for housing company sites. This further research takes place in the national Kiinteistöakku 2030 project, whose results will directly support housing companies’ battery investment decisions across Finland.
