Master's Degree or Path Studies

Data engineering and AI

Why Choose This Programme?

This programme is aimed at professionals with a background in information technology, electronics, or telecommunications, either as engineers or business graduates, who wish to deepen their expertise in data management and artificial intelligence.

In the Data Engineering and AI programme, your advanced-level skills will expand, and you’ll gain new perspectives on applying industry practices in your professional tasks. You will learn to anticipate changes in the operational environment, build a comprehensive understanding of the need for change, and implement necessary development actions.

The studies cover data management, including data collection, preparation, and transformation for data-driven applications. You will also explore machine learning processes, algorithms, and artificial intelligence.

Basic programming skills are recommended as prior knowledge for the programme.

Study Content

The studies consist of common Master-level modules and advanced studies in your specific field of expertise. The overarching themes of the programme are big data management and the development of AI-based solutions.

Topics covered in the advanced studies include:

  • Practical approaches to Data Engineering
  • Machine learning processes and algorithms
  • Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Scope and Duration of the Studies

The scope and duration of the studies depend on your previous education and the degree you are pursuing:

  • The Master of Engineering degree is designed to be completed in 1.5 years alongside work (60 ECTS credits).
  • The Master of Business Administration degree is designed to be completed in 2 years alongside work (90 ECTS credits).

A key component of Master-level studies is the thesis, which is typically carried out as a development or research project within the student’s own organization. The learning assignments and thesis can be integrated into your work tasks, enabling you to simultaneously contribute to the development of your employer’s operations.

The primary language of instruction is English, but some studies are conducted in Finnish. The learning environment is international, and many courses and projects include students from English-language degree programmes.

Study Implementation – Is It Possible to Study While Working?

The Master School programmes at Turku University of Applied Sciences are designed to be flexible and suitable for studying alongside work. The learning approach is practical, with minimal traditional lecture-based teaching. Learning takes place through various assignments and development tasks.

Contact teaching is organized on average two weekdays per month during daytime.

In addition to in-person sessions, studies include online learning, independent work, and various group and project assignments. The studies also benefit employers, as both the learning tasks and the thesis can be carried out as development projects within the workplace.

Non-EU/EEA citizens who have been granted a residence permit for studies are allowed to work an average of 30 hours per week. Read more on working and internships during studies on Migri’s webpage.

When Do Studies Begin?
  • Programmes offered in the spring joint application and summer path application begin in August
  • Programmes offered in the autumn joint application and autumn path application begin in January

After Completing the Programme

Graduates will earn either UAS Master of Engineering or UAS Master of Business Administration degree. The UAS Master’s degree from a university of applied sciences (UAS) is equivalent in competence level to a university Master’s or MSc (Tech) degree and provides the same eligibility for public sector positions.

The UAS Master’s degree enhances your opportunities to pursue more demanding roles, strengthens your skills in project management, business competence, and networking, and supports career advancement. Research shows that completing UAS Master’s degree has a positive impact on career development and job roles.

The programme provides versatile skills especially for planning, executing, and managing tasks related to data management and artificial intelligence. Graduates are equipped to work in demanding project management and administrative roles, as well as expert and development positions in various industries and the public sector.

How many students are selected in this degree programme?

You can find the number of study places in the joint application process and the path studies application in Studyinfo in the education information.

What is UAS Master’s degree?

The UAS Masters degree is intended for professionals already in working life who have an applicable bachelor’s degree or other higher education degree and at least two years of work experience after graduation. A master’s degree is typically completed in 1.5–2 years alongside work. The UAS master’s degree is on the same level as a university master’s degree.

How does studying in path studies differ from degree studies?

In the joint application process, applicants apply to study for a degree. If you apply to Open UAS path studies and are selected, your studies will begin with an Open University of Applied Sciences study right.

Open UAS path studies are an alternative route to a degree. A path study right is granted for one academic year. Path studies consist of first-year studies in a Master’s degree program, about 30 ECTS credits. Studies are completed alongside degree students. This means the mode of studying and e.g. attendance requirements are the same as for degree students.

Path studies are subject to an Open UAS study fee. There is also a difference in the benefits of a path student compared to degree students. Read more about path studies.

You cannot complete a degree as a path student. After completing the required amount of ECTS credits, you can apply for a degree study right via Open UAS separate application. Have a look at our website on separate applications for more details on eligibility criteria and the amount of credits required: Open UAS separate application to Master’s degree studies.

When applying to path studies, the required previous degree is the same as when applying for the program in question in the joint application. However, the work experience required will only be checked when you apply for a degree study right through Open UAS separate application.

Apart from online study programmes, path studies require attendance in Turku, Finland. Please note that as path studies do not lead to a degree, Finnish immigration services are not likely to grant a residence permit for path studies.
