AI Finland, the national AI network, announced the nominees for the AI thesis of the year. Among the top three final thesis nominees was the thesis of Joni Obradovic.
According to AI Finland, the nominees represent a broad range of practical applications, ambitious leadership and groundbreaking research.
In the thesis “Federated brain tumor segmentation with patient-level local differential privacy“, Obradovic developed a method that combines federated learning and local differential privacy for medical imaging.
The solution will train AI models in a distributed way with patient data from different hospitals without the need to transfer sensitive data centrally. The solution improves patient-level privacy by adding controlled noise to the model learning process, and is particularly well suited for applications such as brain tumor segmentation.

The fact that the thesis was ranked in a nationally high-level category shows how great the need is for practical applications and solutions. My thesis demonstrates how the mathematical framework works in a real environment and with the tools that are actually used. Problems can always be solved with theory, but theory also needs to be tested. In machine learning applications, this is essential.

Turku UAS develops future-oriented AI research
The Secure and Accurate Federated Learning as a Service (SA-FLaaS) project develops secure and accurate federated learning solutions, especially for health technology and medical data.
Obradovic’s thesis is a good example of how theses that delve into the practices succeed in solving problems or challenges that arise in a real-life environment.
Effectiveness comes from networks
We have more than 200 RDI projects every year, of which one in four is carried out with an international network.
Our partners include businesses, public sector actors and other organizations.
Each year, more than 100 companies are involved in projects to develop their business through RDI work.
We develop solutions at the interfaces of AI, health technologies and smart computing in the KM4HP and INSIGHT research groups.
International AI Summit in Turku!
AI Summit is the biggest AI event of the autumn
AI Summit is an international AI event that brings together world-class AI researchers, leading business leaders and influential decision makers in Turku.
As part of the AI Summit, an AI Gala will be held on 17 November 2025.
At the Gala, Joni Obradovic will present the main points of his thesis to a jury of distinguished AI experts and business leaders.
