Center for Maritime and Shipbuilding Technologies
The Center for Maritime and Shipbuilding Technologies brings together the expertise of different research groups at Turku University of Applied Sciences. The Center addresses the needs and challenges of the maritime industry by ensuring easy and centralized access to research and innovation cooperation. We offer expertise in shipbuilding, manufacturing and materials technology, energy solutions, digitalisation and sustainable development for the use of companies and organisations in the field.
The aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of the maritime industry, accelerate the development and introduction of new technologies, and build long-term cooperation between companies, universities and research institutes.

Driving the Renewal of the Maritime Industry
The marine and shipbuilding industry is changing rapidly. The green transition, digitalization, automation, cyber threats, emerging manufacturing technologies, and tightening regulations and requirements are putting new demands on ships, their design, construction, and operation.
At the same time, the industry faces significant challenges in improving productivity, cost-efficiency, quality, flexibility and security of supply and in ensuring the availability of new skills, while responding to increasingly demanding environmental regulations, evolving customer requirements and global competition. Solving complex challenges requires highly multidisciplinary expertise, applied research and close collaboration between industry, research and education.
Turku UAS has long engaged in research, development and education cooperation with companies in the field related to the development of marine industry and shipyard operations. The Center for Maritime and Shipbuilding Technologies brings this expertise together into a more visible and easy access entity serving the maritime industry and to create new opportunities to shape the future of the maritime industry together.
The Center strengthens Turku UAS’ ability to serve and address complex industry challenges across the shipbuilding value chain, connect complementary areas of expertise and translate research and technological advances into practical applications. The Center also creates opportunities for new networks, RDI initiatives, joint development projects, technology demonstrations and skills development in cooperation with its research groups, companies and other stakeholders. By bridging research, education and industrial practice, it aims to support the maritime sector’s green and digital transitions, accelerate the adoption of new technologies and contribute to the growth for a more productive, resilient and sustainable marine industry.
