Solar field – Combining sustainable crop production and energy production

Researching combining energy production and crop cultivation

The aim of the solar field project is to promote the combination of solar energy production and crop cultivation (APV systems) by generating new knowledge and developing practical applications for Finnish conditions. The project will develop a useful crop growth model, simulation and modelling methods and business models to support the integration of energy and crop production.

The Solar Energy Field project explores how solar energy production and crop cultivation can be combined profitably and sustainably in Finland. The project focuses on agricultural photovoltaic systems (APV, agrivoltaics) aimed at producing both electricity and crops from the same land.

Practical measurement data will be collected on plant growth, soil properties, and weather conditions. Based on this data, simulation and modeling tools will be developed to assess the effects of various APV solutions on crop yields, light availability, and energy production across Finland. The goal is to optimize the integration of energy production and farming practices based on local conditions.
Additionally, the project will evaluate the economic feasibility of APV systems by examining production revenues, energy costs (LCOE), and agricultural costs (LCOA). The project will also develop a land lease model that supports long-term and fair cooperation between farmers and energy companies.

The Solar Energy Field Project brings together researchers, farmers, businesses, and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions and disseminate research-based knowledge throughout the country. The aim is to promote the integration of solar energy and crop cultivation in Finnish agriculture.

Expected outcomes

  • Information on soil, growth, yield, and weather conditions
  • Modeling and simulation tools for evaluating farm-specific APV solutions
  • Crop growth models and simulation results
  • Business and land lease models to clarify economic parameters

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and implemented by Turku University of Applied Sciences together with the University of Helsinki.
