As artificial intelligence transforms the field and automates routine tasks, the industry needs professionals who can think critically, understand the big picture, and build high-quality digital systems. In the Software Engineering programme, you develop the skills to design, implement, test, and evolve reliable software solutions – and to become a creator of next-generation technology.
The School of Software and Interactive Technologies (SAIT) is a community of over 500 students, teachers, and experts. You will not just study theory but actively apply what you learn by solving real-world problems. Your studies take place in an inspiring setting where long-term research excellence is widely recognized and award-winning. You will study in close connection with our research groups and gain hands-on experience in the acclaimed theFIRMA learning environment, working on real projects that reflect modern software development practices. Study contents
The program proceeds in two phases. First, you build a solid foundation through basic studies. Then you develop your expertise through professional studies and specialization. Throughout your studies – and especially in projects and your thesis – you bring these elements together in practice. When you graduate, you will have strong technical skills and a professional identity that reflects your strengths and future career direction.
The extent of the degree programme is 240 ECTS credits and the planned duration of the studies is four years. The curriculum consists of
- Basic and professional studies (180 ECTS)
- Optional studies (15 ECTS)
- Practical training (30 ECTS)
- Bachelor’s thesis project (15 ECTS).

- Interactive Systems
- This specialization emphasizes teamwork, project‑based development, innovative thinking, and mathematically oriented technical problem‑solving, supported by cutting‑edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, sensor fusion, and digital fabrication. It prepares you for diverse and continuously evolving roles in the design and development of interactive systems.
- You are passionate about extended reality (XR) and the creation of virtual and mixed‑reality environments. In your future career, you work on systems that combine robotics, machine vision, immersive technologies, and games. With this skillset, you will graduate as a highly qualified programmer or technical artist capable of designing and developing intelligent applications, simulations, and digital environments.
- Software Engineering and Project Management
- This specialization focuses on managing and understanding the big picture of software development. It combines AI‑enhanced mobile and web development, software architecture, user interface (UI) design, project management, and business studies into a future‑ready competency.
- Learning takes place through real client projects at theFIRMA ICT project office and in close collaboration with industry partners. You gain practical experience with modern technologies, AI‑assisted workflows, and professional project practices.
- Graduates are well prepared for such roles as software developer, UI designer, software architect, Scrum Master, or project manager – supported by strong technical skills, business‑oriented project expertise, and an entrepreneurial mindset. technology.
Basic studies contain the fundamentals of science and ICT, language and communication courses, and coaching in study skills. The basic studies take place during the first and the second study year, and they guide you into the topics of your future professional field. The goal is to build solid fundamental knowledge and skills required in the professional studies.
Professional studies start in the second year and continue to the second last semester.
In your optional studies you can include studies from your own or other degree programs, or from other universities.
The aim of the practical training is to get acquainted with your future professional tasks and to learn how to apply your knowledge and skills to practice. The 30 credits correspond to about 21 calendar weeks of training. The training is supported by a teacher and an on-site supervisor.
In your bachelor’s thesis, you develop and demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a practical expert assignment related to professional studies.
After graduation
Employers today are looking for professionals who understand the “big picture” – people who can combine technical skills with problem-solving, collaboration and understanding of real-world contexts. Upon graduation, you will be a highly skilled professional ready to build reliable and intelligent services for the AI era. Typical positions of graduates include Game Developer, Interactive Systems Developer, Project Manager, Scrum Master, Software Architect, Software Developer, Technical Artist and UI/UX Designer.

Joint application means that you can apply to up to six study programmes with one application form. These six options may include degree programmes from one or several different higher education institutions in Finland.

How many students are selected in this degree programme?
You can find the number of study places offered in joint application to this degree programme, and path studies in the programme, on Studyinfo.fi on the degree programme’s page. The number of study places varies from year to year.
In joint application the quota for first-time applicants in this degree programme is 90%, which means that the majority of study places are reserved for applicants applying for their first higher education degree.
In path studies there is no quota for first-time applicants. Path studies might be a good fit for you especially if you have already accepted a study place at a higher education institution.
How does studying in path studies differ from
degree studies?
In the joint application process, applicants apply to study for a degree. In path studies, studies begin as an Open UAS student.
Open UAS path studies are an alternative route to a degree. In path studies, you can get started with studies included in the degree. Path studies consist of the first-year studies (60 ECTS) of a Bachelor’s degree, which you complete alongside degree students. The actual studies or the contents of the studies do not differ from 1st year degree studies.
You cannot complete a degree as a path student. Based on the credits you attain and your success in path studies, you can apply for a degree study right via Open UAS separate application and continue your studies seamlessly until graduation.
Path studies are subject to an Open UAS study fee. There is also a difference in the benefits of a path student compared to degree students.
Apart from online study programmes, path studies require attendance in Turku, Finland.
Please note that as path studies do not lead to a degree, Finnish immigration services are not likely to grant a residence permit for path studies.

Separate applications
You can apply to Turku UAS also through separate applications. Application periods and student selection methods are different from joint application procedure.
Tuition fee
Tuition fees are charged from students who are not citizens of EU/EEA countries and are accepted to English conducted Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programmes. Read more about the tuition fee.
When are studies starting?
If you apply in the spring application periods (first and second joint application and path studies application), the studies begin in August /September.
If you apply in the autumn application periods (autumn joint application and path studies application), the studies begin in January.
